A legal battle has raged between Kerala and the state of Karnataka over the use of the abbreviation KSRTC since 2014. According to the Central Trade Marks Registry, the KSRTC abbreviation, logo, and term ‘Ana Vandi’ can only be used by Kerala because they filed and began using it in 1965 following British raj, but Karnataka only began using it after 1973. As a result, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) has stated that it will issue a notice to the Karnataka State Transportation Corporation (KSTC) requesting that the acronym not be used.

History

On March 15, 1965, the Kerala government established the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) following the passage of the Road Transport Corporation Act in 1950. The Transportation Department became an independent corporation on April 1, 1965.

Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) is a government-owned road transport company in Kerala, India.It is one of the oldest government-run public bus systems in the country. The corporation is divided into three zones (South, Central, and North), with its headquarters in the state capital of Thiruvananthapuram. With 6,241 buses on 6,389 routes, the number of buses on the road has increased from 1,200,000 km to 1,422,546 km. The company transports an average of 3.145 million commuters per day.

To address urban transportation issues, the Kerala Urban Road Transport Corporation (KURTC) was established under the KSRTC in 2015. It first opened its doors on April 12, 2015, in Thevara. On November 9, 2021, KSRTC SWIFT was established as a legally independent business to manage the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation’s long-distance buses for a 10-year period in order to assist the corporation in overcoming its financial crisis.
